What is Montagem Music? Inside the High-Energy Brazilian Sound Dominating the Internet
If you have spent any time scrolling through TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts over the last couple of years, chances are you have encountered a relentless, dizzying electronic beat. It features heavy, distorted basslines, rapid-fire vocal chops, frantic cowbells, and an atmosphere that feels equal parts hypnotic and chaotic.
Chances are, you were listening to Montagem.
Rooted deep in the digital underground of Brazil, Montagem has evolved from a localized regional remix style into a global internet phenomenon. But what exactly is it, where did it come from, and why has it captured the ears of millions worldwide?
The Origins: From Funk Carioca to “Montagem”
To understand Montagem, you have to look at its predecessor: Funk Carioca (often simply called Brazilian Funk), which emerged from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1980s and 90s, heavily influenced by Miami bass, hip-hop, and local electronic rhythms.
In Portuguese, the word montagem translates to “assembly” or “montage.” In the early days of Brazilian electronic music production, producers would “assemble” tracks by cutting, splicing, and layering a cappella vocals from classic funk tracks over heavy drum loops and samples.
