Italian Happy Birthday Song Lyrics: Tanti Auguri a Te

Singing “Happy Birthday” is a universal tradition, and in Italy, it comes with its own warm, melodic twist. Whether you are planning a surprise party for an Italian friend, brushing up on your language skills, or preparing to blow out some candles in Rome or Milan, knowing how the Italians celebrate with song is a wonderful cultural touch.

The Classic Italian Birthday Song: “Tanti Auguri a Te”

When it’s time to bring out the birthday cake (la torta) and light the candles (le candeline), Italians gather around and sing to the tune of the familiar English “Happy Birthday to You”.

Instead of a direct translation of the English words, the standard Italian version uses a cheerful phrase that translates roughly to “Many wishes to you.”

Core Lyrics Snapshot

While copyright restrictions prevent publishing full song lyric databases, the traditional, short verses sung around every Italian birthday cake go like this:

Tanti auguri a te,
Tanti auguri a te,
Tanti auguri a [nome],
Tanti auguri a te!

(Translation: Many wishes to you / Many wishes to you / Many wishes to [name] / Many wishes to you!)

Variations and Fun Twists

Italians love to personalize their celebrations, and children (and playful adults!) often add funny or affectionate spin-off lines at the end of the song.

• Inserting Names and Terms of Endearment: Instead of just inserting the name, you might hear tanti auguri caro [nome] (for a male) or tanti auguri cara [nome] (for a female) to say “Happy birthday, dear [name]”.
• The Playful Addition: A very common playful line added by kids at the end of the song is “E la torta a me!”, which jokingly translates to “And the cake for me!”

Essential Italian Birthday Vocabulary

If you want to round out your greetings beyond just singing the song, keep these common phrases handy:

• Tanti Auguri! – Best wishes / Many happy returns!
• Cento di questi giorni! – May you live to see a hundred days like this! (A traditional way to wish someone a long and happy life)
