Unraveling the Journey of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti: Was He an IAS Officer or Not?

When millions of aspirants across India think about civil services preparation, one name invariably comes to mind: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. Revered as a mentor, educator, and the founder of Drishti IAS, he commands immense respect, with many affectionately addressing him as “Sir”.

Because of his profound mastery over subjects like history, philosophy, and Indian polity, a common question often floats among newcomers: Was Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he was never an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer. However, his relationship with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination is deeply rooted, fascinating, and ultimately shaped the trajectory of modern education in India.

Clearing the Air: The 1996 UPSC Success

To understand his exact background, we have to look back at 1996. At the young age of 22, Dr. Divyakirti appeared for the rigorous UPSC Civil Services Examination for the very first time—and cleared it successfully.

He secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

While cracking the UPSC exam on the first attempt is a monumental feat, securing AIR 384 meant he was not allocated to the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Foreign Service (IFS), which typically require much higher top-tier ranks. Instead, based on his rank and preferences, he was inducted into the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India.

The Short-Lived Bureaucratic Career

As a CSS officer, Dr. Divyakirti was appointed as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

However, his stint inside the corridors of government bureaucracy was brief. Driven by an innate passion for teaching, literature, and deep intellectual discourse—and finding the procedural constraints of desk bureaucracy misaligned with his calling—he chose to resign from government service within roughly a year. Walking away from a secure government job was a bold gamble, but it paved the way for his true legacy.

From Civil Services Aspirant to Educational Pioneer

Following his resignation, Dr. Divyakirti pursued extensive higher education, eventually earning multiple master’s degrees, an LLB, an M.Phil., and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature from the University of Delhi.

On November 1, 1999, he laid the foundation of Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, starting with just a handful of students. His primary vision was to bridge the systemic gap that hindered Hindi-medium aspirants from competing fairly in the civil services examination. Over the decades, that small classroom transformed into one of India’s most influential coaching and educational institutions.

Summary

  • Was he an IAS officer? No.
  • Did he clear the UPSC exam? Yes, in 1996 (AIR 384).
  • Which service did he join? The Central Secretariat Service (CSS).
  • How long did he serve? Roughly a year before resigning to pursue teaching.

While he never wore the badge of an IAS officer, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti’s contribution to shaping hundreds of actual civil servants has arguably left an even larger imprint on India’s administrative landscape.
